To make it happen, we brought together 22 Spyker C8 Spyders from around the world, their owners, an incredible group of volunteers and partners, and, of course, the Formula 1 drivers themselves. The project started months before the Formula 1 weekend.
Finding 22 Spyker C8 Spyders that were ready to take part was already an adventure in itself. The cars came from all over the world, including Canada, the United States, South Africa, Germany, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Marlog Car Handling helped coordinate the international transport of the Spykers, including the cars travelling to and from Canada and the US.
Each Spyker would be driven around the legendary Zandvoort circuit by its own owner, carrying a Formula 1 driver as its passenger. For the owners, the opportunity to drive their own Spyker around a Formula 1 circuit with a Grand Prix driver standing beside them was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For us, it was an enormous responsibility. Bringing the Spykers back to life, many of the cars had not been driven for years.Before they could take part in the Drivers Parade, every Spyker had to be carefully inspected, serviced and prepared. Some required relatively minor work, while others needed considerably more attention. Fuel pumps had to be replaced, leaks had to be repaired and elctrical systems needed checking. Batteries had to be kept in perfect condition. And, as is often the case with cars that have spent years standing still, unexpected issues appeared along the way. Over several months, our workshop became the meeting point for this extraordinary collection of Spykers. One by one, the cars arrived and were prepared for their journey to Zandvoort. Seeing them all together in one location was already an unforgettable sight. And this was only the beginning.
Turning a Spyker into a Formula 1 passenger carThe Formula 1 drivers needed to be able to stand safely in the passenger side of the Spyker C8 Spider during the parade.To make this possible, the passenger seats were removed and a specially designed steel support frame from the Steelcompany was installed. This provided the drivers with a secure grab bar to hold onto while standing in the car. Of course, a technical solution was only part of the story. It also had to look right. That is where the attention to detail really came into play. Cools upholstery, specialists in automotive upholstery, created beautifully finished leather covers for the steel grab bars, transforming a functional component into something that looked completely at home in a Spyker.They also created a custom leather pouch for each Spyker key fob — another small detail that made the whole experience feel special.
The final preparationsAs the event approached, the collection of Spykers continued to grow. Keeping 22 high-performance cars ready for a Formula 1 event is no small task. Battery maintenance alone required careful planning, which is why CTEK provided a charger for every car. The cars could remain connected to maintain their batteries and Vulpes Goods generously supplied battery-powered compressors, a practical but invaluable addition that helped us keep all the Spykers ready for the big day. DS Covers supplied custom car covers to help protect the cars while they were gathered together and PP's Car Detailing also created a special detailing package for the owners, allowing them to keep their Spykers looking their best. And then there was footwear.Van Lier went one step further and created a special Spyker shoe exclusively for the occasion — a unique piece that perfectly captured the connection between Dutch craftsmanship and the Spyker brand. Every partner contributed something different, but together these details helped turn the Drivers Parade into much more than simply a lap around a racetrack.
24 cars on the road to ZandvoortOn the day of the event, Apex Transport transported the entire collection of cars to Circuit Zandvoort. Seeing the Spykers arrive at the circuit was a moment we will never forget. A collection of 22 C8 Spyders is rare enough anywhere in the world. The atmosphere in the paddock was electric, and the owners were excited. The team was busy with final preparations, the cars were being checked one last time, and then the Formula 1 drivers arrived.
The Drivers ParadeNothing could quite prepare us for the moment the Spykers headed onto the circuit. Their owners were behind the wheel, exactly as they had been for years with their own cars — except that this time, standing beside them was a Formula 1 driver. Thousands of spectators lined the circuit and the reaction to the Spykers was incredible. For the Spyker owners it was overwhelming!These are not simply cars to them. They are pieces of Dutch automotive history, cars that they have invested enormous amounts of passion, time and dedication into preserving. To drive their own Spyker around Zandvoort in front of such a huge crowd, with a Formula 1 driver standing next to them was a moment that none of them are likely to forget.Adding a special personal touch to the Drivers Parade: every Spyker owner received a beautifully crafted plaque inside their car, created by Frank Jeurissen. These plaques were designed to become a unique keepsake of the weekend and ready to be signed by the Formula 1 drivers themselves.And that’s exactly what happened! Even as the car covers from DS Covers.
More than a paradeLooking back, the Drivers Parade was about much more than Formula 1. It was about bringing the Spyker community together.Cars travelled thousands of kilometres to be part of it. Owners travelled with them. Months of preparation went into making sure every car was ready. Partners contributed their expertise and products. And a dedicated group of people worked behind the scenes to make the entire operation possible.For SpykerEnthusiast, it was an enormous honour to be at the centre of it all, we are incredibly grateful to every Spyker owner who trusted us with their car and made the journey to Zandvoort.
